Sumpango

Women of Sumpango are not so much renowned for their weaving skills as they are for their embroidery skills. This is particularly evident in the decoration surrounding huipil neck openings.

Typically, Sumpango women wear a plain, white huipil as an undergarment, tucked into the corte. A decorated huipil is worn over the undergarment, and left to hang over the skirt. Most neck openings are decorated with a ring of flower motifs and may have an elaborate pattern of concentric triangles or scallops. There may also be elaborate overcast stitching along the neck and sleeve openings, as well as along skirt randas.
