Todos Santos Cuchumatán is a small village located in the northwestern Guatemala, near Huehuetenango, the capital of the Huehuetenango department. With a population of 10,000, 92% of which are Maya, the men and women in this village both still wear traditional clothing on a daily basis. Additionally, all clothing,
excepting treadle-loomed cortes made in Huehueutenango, is woven on the backstrap loom.
The most distinguishing aspect of Todos Santos
Cuchumatán clothing is the bold red and white
striping. Before 1950, Supplemental design to the striped fabric was limited to the addition of simple rectangles, often times in the same red tone. After 1950, women began to incorporate brocade designs in other colors, such as the purple, green and orange seen in these pieces.
